The Avenger: Age Of Ultron
|
|
The Avengers: Age of Ultron directed by Joss Whedon is about two characters Toney stark and Bruce Banner trying to jump start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, thing go horribly wrong and it’s up to earths mightiest heroes to stop the criminal Ultron from indorsing his terrible plans.
When looking at the teaser first the genre of the movie can be identified as science fiction mainly through the use of mise- en- scene, editing, and sound. Throughout the teaser we see a robot in red to what look as if he is being created and coming to life, the use of sound effects suggest this as we can hear metals being pulled out also when referring to sound components within this teaser we can hear a bit of the narrative of the other characters and the robot itself along with this sound effect we near a very energetic non- diegetic music. The teaser doesn’t give out much apart from close up of the robot we don’t know how any of the characters look like however the teaser erases many questions as hook to the audiences like who is this robot? What is he going to do? Watching this teaser, we can tell that the robot is the main character.
When looking at the trailer the main genre that we can identify in both trailers is science- fiction although in the trailer we are introduced to more genres such as action we can also identify adventure for instance, the use of prop such as guns and weapons to attack this robot as well as the location of a big city with mortal danger shows an action genre. We also can see components of adventure as a team of people are being show of the innocent characters that get caught up in the mess and action. When watching the theatrical there is certainly a wider audience I undoubtedly think the film is for 12+ as it is a superhero movie with superheroes that come together to defeated this robot, which shows the movie has components of superheroes genres. The fact that the film has superhero component it links in with the target audience’s childhood superheroes dream. However, when looking at the teaser and the trailer we can tell it’s for the male audiences. There are many different representations that are being presented to the audiences within this trailer. For instance, men are being presented strong as the robot that cannot be defeated has a very masculine voice, also all the men are shooting at the robot which shows their bravery as the size of the robot is massive compared to the men as there are many low angle shots when the robot is shown making him look more powerful than the other characters. However, women are being portrayed as caring as hold her hand against the hulk showing her caring motherhood side. I think these representations are used for the audiences to relate back to for instance as they men being strong this is a typical stereotype that men are stronger than women and that women are weaker and caring.
When watching the teaser I did not know as much about the story and the narrative I was able to identify one of the main genre however when watching the theatrical I was able to understand more about what the film was and what was going on who the characters were. But the teaser allowed me raise question that were then later answered in the trailer.

Oculus
|
|
Oculus is a movie directed by Mike Flanagan. The Narrative is about a woman who tries to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder by proving that crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon.
Looking at the teaser of Oculus I can see that props such as a mirror play a big part throughout the film itself, this is shown through the use of blocking, as the mirror is being placed in the centre which pulls our focus to the mirror making the mirror look like a significant object to the film. The teaser of this film doesn’t give out much information about the film its self as less information is given out to the audiences, ideally to hook then into film which I feel that this teaser does. During the teaser we hear a narration of what sound to me little girls voice, with this we see the mirror pouring blood down this is very effective as it catches the audience’s attention to what this mirror as it is very unusually for a mirror to indiscriminately pouring blood down it. During the opening I can see that genre of this film is horror as conventions such as the blood on the mirror suggests this. From watching the teaser is it doesn’t give away too much information about film to it audiences but it does bring up a lot of question what does the mirror do? Who is that girl talking in the narration? What happen to her?
When looking at the theatrical of Oculus there is a new genre mystery is apparent as we can see that a women is trying to prove that the mirror has been responsible for several deaths that have been but on her brother who has now been realised from prison. There apparently conventions of mystery genre within the theatrical of Oculus for instance suspense, hidden evidence the mirror and red hearing foreshadowing clue that leads the audience such as the narration. When watching the trailer of this opening I can say that the target audiences of this film is probably 18 from looking at the theatrical I can see their strong blood and gore as well as strong horror. From looking at the trailer the film look like it is for all genders as there are women and men in the teaser. When watching the teaser I could still predict the target audiences however, I wasn’t able to see the mystery genre in the teaser as there are conventions that have been developed in the theatrical.
The representation that is being presented to the audience is that women and strong brave and rescuers as the women try to get her bother out of prison by trying to prove that the mirror is responsible for the killing of people there are many long takes of the women trying to solve this mystery. Throughout the theatrical there is also another view of women we get as terrifying and daunting as she become ghost from the mirror we mainly see this through the uses of longs shots as the we can see the mothers costume as she wears long white gown. The audiences also get view that children are not brave as they are crying and screaming daddy, this is shown in a medium angle when the little girl and boy huddle together. There is mixture of representation the audiences get from watching the theatrical, there is even split of the gender of characters within this opening
In my opinion I did not like the theatrical of this film as I feel as if it gives away too much and that I can predict what is going to happen in the film. From looking at the teaser and trailer of this film I think it is best if less is given out to the audiences because then they can be more interested into finding out more about film. i prefer the teaser than the theatrical as I know less which make me want to go find out what the movie is about.

Burnt

Burnt is a film directed by John Wells. This film tells a story about Adam Jones is a chef who destroyed his career with drugs and diva behaviour. He cleans up and returns to London, determined to redeem him by spearheading a top restaurant that can gain three Michelin stars.
The two clips are two different trailers that I will be looking because Burnt is a new concept there is no reference point for the audiences. Which means a traditional teaser would not work for this type of audiences because the film needs to hook them into the film as there is no previous knowledge about the film which means that the audience can not relate back to previous films. Therefore I have chosen to look at two different trailers that have been released to draw the audiences into the movie. When analysing the fist trailer I see that is very person to Adam Jones life it tells a story about him and how he become this amazing chef. The trailer one has very dramatic music to it there is a lot given away about the narrative because Burnt is a brand new film I like this idea that the audiences have a lot more information about the film in the trailer so they can be hooked into the film. There are many genres being portrayed within this trailer such as comedy and drama as we hear his narration about how he sniffs and his journeys of becoming a chef, how much he misses the tension in the kitchen. The costume and props such as the chefs while cost and the knife and food sizzling sets the theme of what is film about to the audiences. We see a transition of people working in his kitchen at the beginning which can symbolises how long a trying it is to work in a restaurant. Looking at trailer two is gives out another set of genre to it audiences from trailer one we see more action behind being a chef and the people that are after him. We near very dramatic music as well as the pace of edit becomes faster emphasising on the action.

Mission: Impossible - RogueNation
|
|
Mission Impossible Rogue Nation directed by Christopher Mc Quarrie is a story about Ethan and team take on their most impossible mission yet, eradicating the Syndicate an International rogue organization as highly skilled as they are, committed to destroying the IMF.
When watching the teaser you can undoubtedly identify the genre of the film form the director use of mise-en-scene, editing, sound and cinematography but the conventions of the genre are clearly being presented as we can see mortal danger, chases, futuristic, mission waiting to be completed, cars, motorcycles and the protagonist being help by a team. This shows that the genre of this film is mainly action and adventure, this teaser has more than one genre so it can attract as many audiences within these genres. These genres are combined as we can see all of the conventions of each genre within the teaser. Props such as gadgets, spy glasses and fancy gun which contribute to the genre of the teaser as they are all components that make an action scene also the location we see in the teaser big city and fancy building also fit the genre of this film. When looking at teaser pace of edit is really fast as there are fast cuts between the action making the action seem intense and exciting for the audience there is a lot of action with this teaser with all the focus mainly on one character Ethan Tunt as there is more screen time on the character then the other character in the teaser. The teaser has many long shot and medium shot this set the scene for the audiences. We can also see a point of view shot from Ethan so we as the audiences can get involved with the character and the action. The music used is a Mission Impossible theme so that audience expect excitement so they get it. Also the clocking ticking in the background makes the audience feel like they are running out of time. I like this teaser because it doesn’t give out too much information I teaser tries to get the Mission Impossible franchise.
When watching the theatrical there is a new genre, comedy introduced to the characters right at the beginning. This get the audiences more excited and energized about watching the movie which draws the audiences into the film and get the audiences talking about the film. The theatrical has a slower beginning whereas the teaser was very fast with a fast pace of edit. There is a new location introduced when Ethan goes under water the audiences are thrilled when they see the character in dangerous situations. There are also new prop introduced such as aeroplanes, hammer and gadgets which get the audiences thrilled and eager to watch the film. There are many close up on new characters that are being introduced which gets audiences asking questions to hook them into watching the film. There is more CGI in the theatrical for instance more explosions making the film look exciting. The music is upbeat however, there is a silence key character speak and in-between the action. The theatrical is more about the plot and narrative. The audiences of this is more likely to be the Mission Impossible franchise. The representation of women is being represented at strong as we can see how they are getting involved with the fights.

When analysing the teaser and theatrical of these films I can say that in some of these teasers they give out very less information to their audiences for example The Avengers whereas other teaser give out a lot more information to their audiences such as Mission Impossible however I found that some theatricals give away too much about the film and you can make a prediction of what is going to happen in the film which is why when doing my teaser or theatrical I want to make sure that I do not want give away so much information especially if I do a theatrical I would prefer to keep my audience in the dark about the whole film.
Theatrical trailers related to our product
Gone Girl
The husband of the missing women is wearing casual jeans and t-shirt which helps to give it that drama genre feel to it. However, the rest of the trailer shows the narrative of the film which could be recognised as thriller. This is because the narrative revolves around the investigation of some sort of enigma that the audience are trying to figure out. The film trailer also informs the audience of the violence within the film which is central for most thriller films. The short takes of the scenes taken from the film are in no order and jump around from scene to scene which gives suspicion and confusion to the audience as they are totally unaware of what is going on and may feel like they'd understand if they went and watched the whole film (which is what most trailers do, especially thrillers). One of the main characters, the husband, has the most screen time in the trailer only because the other main character, his wife, is missing which the trailer shows and may allow the audience to think that he is an important character when it comes to the reason behind his wife going missing. Throughout both the teaser and theatrical, the missing wife is being framed as 'innocent' although we don't know yet the reason for her missing, if she was taken or it was her decision to leave and this is the main enigma of the film that the audience would want to find out, making the trailer more suspenseful. The music playing in the trailer is relaxed and calming, which is the complete opposite of what the scenes are showing as they look tensed and upsetting. This contradiction helps to enable suspense as the audience upon watching the trailers would want to know what is really happening that the trailer is hiding, and the audience get a sense of this mystery when the teaser trailer ends with the husband saying "I did not kill my wife, I am not a murderer".
Girl on the train
This trailer begins with an establishing shot of the house in which the characters live in the film. The woman who goes missing in the film is the first to be introduced as it is her kidnapping that is the enigma of the film that the audience, as well as the characters, are trying to solve. We see the woman before she goes missing, and she is dressed in dark jogging bottoms and a light hoodie and seems as if she is about to go for a run. The girl on the train sees the woman in the same state that the audience do which allows the audience to feel involved/sympathise with her from the beginning of the trailer as they see the same that she does. The soundtrack used for the thriller starts of slow and steady, but heightens when the girl on the train witnesses the woman go missing. The trailer includes many narrations made by the characters in the film which the helps the audience to know more about the narrative although it is all said in riddles. This allows the target audience's expectations of the film to be met as they enjoy solving riddles which is a convention of a thriller film.
