Title
We discussed that our film title would be "The Games That They Played" as the title of the film reflect the movie and the narrative because as Jess gets caught up in her fathers lives she also get caught up in the games that her father plays as a mob boss.

Target audience
The potential target audience that we have chosen is 17-18+ as this will allow us to include strong issues within the opening such as: strong violence, strong horror, strong blood and gore also discriminatory language and behaviour. 18+ fits into the crime genre with not as much limitations also the 17-18+ is a good target audience for us as it fit in with our age group therefore we are easily able to relate with our audiences and figure out what their needs are and what satisfies this particular target audience. Which is why we found it the best target audiences and because our filming is crime opening we can then explore this genre as far as possible with less limitations. There are many examples of crime films that have the same target audiences. For instance, "Godfather" The movie is aimed at a teenage to adult audience and features some violent scenes. another classical example is "LA Confidential" aimed at a predominantly adult audience older teenager audiences. |
Possible actors and directors
Actors that are linked to our idea of crime are actors such as Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, Mickey Rourke and Joe Viterelli (and many more). Robert De Niro has been in films such as 'Goodfellas' (1990) and 'The Godfather: Part II' (1974). These films either have a genre or sub-genre of crime which is why this actor links with our idea. We also have Christopher Walken who has starred in films such as 'Pulp fiction' and 'Catch me if you can'. These films involve and gangsters and crime which is again why it links to our ideas. Directors that link to our idea of crime are the director of all of the above films. The director of 'Goodfellas' was Martin Scorsese. Who has directed films such as 'Wolf of wall street' and 'Shutter Island'. Even though these films do not link with our ideas the director uses a wide range of techniques to show the strong from the weak. Which is why I love watching his films. Also the director of 'Catch me if you can' was Steven Spielberg. who has directed films like 'Saving private ryan' and 'Schindler's List', both these films are war based which really interests me. |

Potential Locations
The darkroom is where most of the suspense and the main action will take place, this is considered as a master shot, because during the course of our 2 minutes opening there will be a lot of parallel and cross-cutting editing. We are going to film the darkroom with all the lights turned off , but I took the pictures of the set with the lights on just to show the full view of the set back to front. This is where the chess game will take place between both mob bosses, so we can see both views of the mob bosses. What I mean by this is that because the shape of the room is rectangle, we can experiment shot reverse shots, over shoulder shots, POV shot and finally various angles.
There are so much possibilities that can be done , when it comes to filming in the dark room because the audience would want to empathise with one of the characters. The reason why the darkroom was chosen was because the shape of the room almost shows indefinite moment of action, what I mean by this is that because width is really small it kinds bring the action on the table. We though this would be a stereotypical element from a crime genre because we almost felt that only one will leave this room alive, so a game of chess is like gambling between life and death. This what we though as a group before picking this set, because it brings back that old school Mafia style, that typical that chess game that's always played by both mob bosses.
The reason why I say this is because its a stereotypical event that I had observed when I was researching through crime genre related films, that would have locations and set like this similar to this. The effect this set would have on the audience is that it feels really dark trapped, but also at the same time bringing in the tension between the both characters that will be both placed oppositely each other when the chess game progresses. The darkroom, will give the audience perspective of both mob bosses and what their goal is, but at the same time the audience will soon find someone to empathise with as the opening scene progresses on. In conclusion that set we chose has infinite possibilities on how the opening scene could go, its just the matter of fact how we deliver the impression to the audience.

The two pictures shown above is our potential locations, the reason is because these are the types of locations and elements that would be present, if you watched a Crime genre based film . So in picture one ,you could imagine this location being used to portray the murderer chasing after the victim. The reason why we chose this location to be our potential is because we can experiment different angles and shots for our opening scene. In picture two this location seems less isolated compare to picture one. We chose picture 2 to be our official location because we pictured if being an aftermath of the crime scene. This location has great lighting to show the highlight of the murder, and also the an investigation taking place.
Our aim objective of picking both of these potential locations was to create that isolated feeling and also creating that tension of suspense. Both pictures has great source of lighting, but there are negatives to it, such as what time of the day we are going to film it since it is a location, and also cautious how we are going to customise the location, whereas for sets its really easy to move the props. Since figure 1 is our potential location, what matters most is filming it within a good time, what I mean by this is try to film some of the raw footage if its about to rain, or get dark etc. This is important because the weather and time will have a huge effect on our filming, therefore its important that confirm already what time are locations going to be filmed and in what weather.
It seems like that the 1st picture of our potential location gives an impression of a horror genre, the use of lighting shows the audience that its a crime genre. Personally I think we picked two good potential locations because so many ideas can mapped over this location, to make sure we get the most effect from both these locations. Our group will make sure that there is representation of crime elements present within both locations, by positioning the props, taking different angles of the lighting and mostly planning when to film.

Script
The development of our script is shown above. We have our first draft which is not in must detail, which only intakes the base of our idea and plot. In the second draft our scrip is in a lot more detail but with correction that needs to be added and finally, the last scrip is our completed and final script. However, in the last script we did write that we are going set the scene in bar we have now changed that as we are not able to find a bar that will allow us film we have changed this scene which will now be set in alleyway the scene will still be the same but the location will be different.
We have made some new changes to our film opening, therefore we went back made some changes to our planning here are some of our changes we made. We made these changes because the our characters i.e. the mob bosses wouldn't have made sense as our actor would've been young and mob bosses tend to be really old.
Brainstorm Ideas
To begin our plan, we decided to brainstorm all our ideas of what genre we would use and our initial ideas. We brainstormed genres, for example, horror, action, mystery, crime, adventure and thriller. we decided to stick the idea of crime, detectives and murders. our initials ideas were that there would be two detectives trying to solve a murder case of a young innocent student. I suggested that we use a circular narrative (seeing the victim dead) so that the audience can understand the story line easier. I also suggested that we use the darkroom to film the meeting with the two detectives because we can have high control over the mise-en-scene in this scene. We also discussed getting boiler suits for a forensic team to use when they are taking evidence from the crime scene. Also we wanted to use the location of the river/ forest opposite the our school because it is a typical place for a body to be dumped or for someone to be murdered in.
Genre
Crime
This genre fictionalizes crimes, criminals and their motives. There are also many sub-genre that go with crime but for now we have chosen crime.
Plot
Two detectives investigate a crime, One of detectives are linked in with the victim. The victims dad seems to be linked in with two highly qualified mob bosses, the daughter gets caught up in her father mistakes and losses her life. loose
Title
We discussed that our film title would be "The Games That They Played" as the title of the film reflect the movie and the narrative because as Jess gets caught up in her fathers lives she also get caught up in the games that her father plays as a mob boss.
There are just few changes within the plot however our genre and title is still the same.

Treatment Sheet
Script
We have changed our script which has a different narration to it because we felt as if we was giving too much information about the characters deaths and her self we wanted to keep our victim mysterious we don't want to give to much out to the audiences about the victim and her death therefore we changed our scrip with a shorter narration to hook the audiences in to her death.
Storyboard
Target Audience
Even though we have changed around our ideas around, we have still stuck with the same target audience since we haven't changed out idea completely we have just changed about some scenes.
Character Profile and costumes
Victim (Madelyn Begley)
Name: Madelyn Robertson Gender: Female Age:17 Height: 5 ft 5 Hair: Dark brown Eyes: Brown During the opening victim lays down on the floor dead, this is her only role, we don't see the victims face we only see little of her costume the audience see that she wears dark colours. Throughout the opening the audiences he identity is not shown. |
Police Officer
Names: Karolis Narvilas Ages: 39 Height: 6'ft Hair: Light brown Eyes: blue/green During the opening we see the police officer lifting the forensic tape to monitor the crime scene by only people with authority entering the scene such as detectives and forensics. The audiences don't know much about police officer he is not main character he doesn't play big part in the opening. |
Two forensic guys
Names: Unknown Ages: Unknown Height: 5 ft 9 and 6 ft 1 Hair: Unknown Eyes: Brown Here we have two forensic guys. We don't really know much about them other then they turn up to crime scenes take a few pictures take evidence away and take all that back to their laboratory for analysis. All the evidence that they analyse goes back to Brooks and Watson for them to have their interpretation on the investigation. We also believe that they have never taken off their boiler suits since they put them on 10 years ago when they first started their job |
Detective (Akinola Fapahunda )
Name: James Brooks Gender: Male Age: 27 Height: 5'10 ft Hair: Black Eyes: Brown James Brooks is a young detective who was recruited by Donald years ago. He is well dressed, in smart casual clothing. Whenever he is at work he is very serious and also on top of his cases and reports that are due in, however when he is off the clock he has a tendency to go partying and enjoy himself over the weekend. |
Detective (Desmond Ofasi)
Name: Donald Watson Gender: Male Age: 36 Height: 5ft 11 Hair: Black Eyes: Brown Donald is one of the top detectives in London. He recruited James Brooks a few years ago and they have been partners ever since. Donald's father was the best detective to this day therefore everyone naturally applies pressure to him to be the same as his father if not better. Donald is a very serious character and doesn't know the difference between his personal life and his work life. He also was a friend of the father of the victim, so he is compelled to solve the case. He wears formal wear where ever he goes. The most causal he will get is his PJ's, in the evening. He is an all around serious actor and is still in the process of training James Brooks |
With the detectives we did not give them specific costume but we did tell them to dress smartly with dark colours to show their importance and higher status we wanted our detectives and most of our characters to dress in dark colours to emphasis on the dark and gloomy environment they work in. We wanted our detectives to show their difference in personalities through their costume.
Props
Office scene
In this scene we have our two main actors surrounded lots of props that help to create the strong mise en scene, in this scene. The first noticeable prop is the Apple monitor screen, We used this to show that they were in a office and also to show that their modern, newly built police station with state of the art facilities. We can also see this by the room having no walls and just having glass windows. This gives the scene a sophisticated look. Also to the left of the monitor we placed and pen holder, a mug and a 1 litre bottle water. This was to emphasis that they were in a office in a police station because typically a police officer would have such things on their desk in other movies as well in real life. We also had pictures of suspects scattered round Donald's desk and location sites on the desk. In the scene we can also we folders and books that are on top of each other. We can also see a wipe board behind Donald (Desmond) which some detectives use to map out their ideas and try and connect the dots. We tried to add as much office props as possible, we have also printed police documents from the internet to make the office look like a detectives office we also go a map and pens.

Crime scene
This is the forensic kit that I was able to buy from amazon. We used it during the time lapse scene. The reason why we brought this forensic kit is because we figured due to the changes that we made to the narrative, that the forensic investigators should have a forensic to make them look more professional. This was also part of the mise en scene, because we wanted to create the impression that it was a real crime scene.
|
What was included in the forensics kit
As you can see from this screenshot of the time lapse scene, we have put the props from the forensic kit to good use and the mise en scene I was hoping to create looked impressive. While filming we decided to use the victims (Madelyn) shoes and her hand bag as props because we realised we could use them to show that their was a struggle between the victim and the murderer. In the bag the victim had everyday things, such as a pencil case, water bottle, books and her personal things (deodorant, cream and lip gloss) that we set out around the victim.

Description of our locations
when scouting for location we wanted a location that creates a mysterious look. This location is at the back of the school this we thought the location was the best location for this scene because it wasn't public it is very empty space also its very trash yard where the school put the rubbish which helped create a lonely atmosphere for the victim.
When scouting for location we was looking for a location that has a sense of sophistication. We found this perfect as the open windows gave out that office look, even through this was a printer room. we transformed this room as it didn't look like an office at first so we added in some props to make the room look like a detectives office.
We had chosen to use quite natural lighting for both locations. In order to maintain a controlled use of lighting, and to sustain continuity between shots, we made use of what we had available for instance making sure film at the same time we filmed the first scenes. We needed to be aware of the lighting because it was winter it would get darker quicker, which meant that filming outside would have limitations.
